Ketoconazole Shampoo and Hair Loss
The main cause of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia. As androgen levels build in the body, it turns into an enzyme called dihydrotestostrone or DHT. It is this DHT enzyme that attaches itself to hair follicles and kills them. It is believed that the Ketoconazole in Nizoral Shampoo acts as an anti-androgen which slows this process that leads to alopecia.
Another cause of hair loss is inflammation of the scalp, which is known to be a common condition for people experiencing alopecia. This inflammation is caused by bacteria adjoining hair follicles. Ketoconazole helps to reduce this inflammation.
Another factor of Ketoconazole Shampoo is that it reduces the activity of the Sebaceous glands. These glands are attached to hair follicles and produce Sebum. Too much Sebum can clog follicles and retard hair growth. It reduces this production and helps keep hair follicles clear of Sebum.
Nizoral Shampoo can be purchased over the counter with Ketoconazole in 1% solution. A stronger 2% solution is available, but only through prescription. Use of this shampoo is recommended 2 or 3 times a week and should be allowed to soak the scalp for three or four minutes before rinsing. As with many hair loss treatments, one of the possible side effects is actual hair loss. This is normal and temporary, as the scalp is being prepared for greater future hair growth. Another reported side
effect is a light headache after using Nizoral Shampoo. This is not considered dangerous, but if experienced after each application, should be stopped and a doctor consulted.
In summary, Nizoral Shampoo with Ketoconazole has been shown to be as effective as Minoxidil in reversing hair loss. The fact that this is a side effect of its original intended use only underscores this effectiveness.
